Herne Bay and surrounding areas
For further information about Herne Bay: Herne Bay Information
The area of Herne Bay started as the haunt of smugglers and eventually became a fashionable Victorian resort. Although the present town was founded about 150 years ago nearby Reculver was the site of a Roman fort and Saxon church mentioned in the doomsday book. The historic ruins of the church are a popular local visitor attraction.
The nearby village of Herne is home to a picturesque church and traditional Kentish smock windmill (built in the late 18th century and now a popular attraction).
Today Herne Bay is a hospitable seaside town, with miles of safe beaches and good fishing and water sport waters. The town has seen major improvements over the last 10 years. There has been major investment in pedestrianisation of the central shopping area, new harbour and sea defences, new Victorian style sea front gardens and promenade, refurbishment of the Bandstand and a swimming pool and cinema complex. The town can now look forward to a bright future as a major day trip and short break resort once again.
Improvements have also begun to reap rewords with the town wining the prestigious Seaside award for 1999 & 2000 and this year having been awarded a blue flag for the quality of bathing water at the central beach area.
Herne Bay is within commuting distance of London via either train, into London Victoria, express coach or car. It is approximately 67 miles east of London on the North Kent Coast at the outer edge of the Thames estuary. The town can be reached either by train (90mins approximately) or via the A2, M2 and A299 from London (75 to 90 mins approximately).
The Cathedral and University City of Canterbury is 8 miles to the south, the ferry port and cruise terminal at Dover is 25 miles (30 mins) away, the vehicle terminal for the channel tunnel at Cheriton Folkestone is 29 miles (36 mins), the channel tunnel passenger terminal is 24 miles (37 mins) away at the market town of Ashford.
The town is within easy access of the south east airports with the new London Manston International airport 13 miles (17 mins) to the east and London Gatwick 71 miles (75 mins) to the southwest. London's other airports Heathrow (95 miles, 105 mins), City (64 miles 75mins), Stansted (85 miles, 105 mins) and Luton (105 miles, 120 mins) are all within reach via the M2 & M25.
